Frequency: 1x per month*; third Saturday of the month from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Square Friendship Center (2733 W. Lawrence Ave.)
* requires a commitment of three distribution dates within a six-month period.
Duration: 2.5 hours
Who: Great for folks who want to work with the community and are free the third Saturday of the month. Even if you can volunteer only certain months, please consider this opportunity.
Each month, Friendship Pet Food Pantry distributes food to an average of 40 to 50 families, most of whom own multiple cats, dogs or a combination of both. It can be very busy, especially when the doors first open at 9 a.m. We’re best able to serve everyone thoughtfully and efficiently if we have at least five people on hand.
Here’s what a morning looks like:
Set-up: 8:30-9 a.m.
Move bags and cans of food from the back storage room to the front area. Set up separate tables for dog food, cat food, kitty litter and pet accessories (leashes, collars, bowls, etc.).
Distribution: 9-11 a.m.
Front desk volunteers check in clients and assist new clients with completing sign-up forms. Other volunteers greet clients, inquire about the number and types of pets, and work with them to select the appropriate amount and type of food and other items as needed. Volunteers might also discuss pet health and offer recommendations for low-cost veterinary services (materials available to share).
Clean-Up: 11-11:15 a.m.
Return any leftover food to storage room and tidy up the front room.
